A Think Tank For Executives
Spring 2008
In This Issue

We’ll start with Lynn Ozer, one of the members of our new Senior Leaders group and an EVP with Susquehanna Bank. Several of you may know her as one of the most well-respected SBA lenders in the country but you may not be aware of the diversity and depth of her background. Read on to hear her story as well as her insights into managing the money-side of a small business.

Lynn Ozer
From Rejects to Riches:
The Rewards of Small Business Lending

When she graduated from Temple University magna cum laude with an accounting degree, Lynn Ozer couldn’t find a job. Thirty-seven interviews -- and corresponding rejection letters later - she switched gears and landed in an uncommon career. Over thirty years later, she is now a nationally renowned expert in SBA lending.

As Executive Vice President of Government Guaranteed Lending at Susquehanna Bank, Lynn oversees SBA and USDA lending across a three-state region. She joined this fully-owned subsidiary of Susquehanna Bancshares, a $13.1B regional bank, through the acquisition of Patriot Bank, nine months after she started in 2003.

Greetings!

As many of you know, it’s not enough for the President or CEO of an emerging enterprise to have the right business smarts and good instincts. Having a good "second" or even "third" is critical as well to how successfully a small business fares, especially in more difficult and challenging economic times. In this issue of our "Un-Newsletter", we salute those other leaders who are often the lynch pins in their organizations – and without whom the CEO couldn’t fully be what they need to be be. As always, feel free to share your feedback, comments and suggestions by E-mail.

And - continuing with our leadership theme - we’d like to highlight the talents of CEO Think Tank®’s leadership group and our members by sharing the following articles and "commandments" on working with leaders in your organization.

The first is courtesy of Doug Diamond, who facilitates a CEO group in Montgomery County. The second comes from Rob Gilfillan, President of Cenero and one of our CEO group members. As an aside, we’re grateful to Rob for sharing his "Ten Commandments" of business leadership but we are not sure of the attribution. If any of you might know the origin of these "commandments", please let us know. Thanks!

Title Tips or...Titles are NEVER Free

Unbeknownst to many business owners, title changes can be a very tricky proposition. While on the surface, they don’t appear to "cost" companies anything, they can be powerful motivators – and demotivators. Therefore, inexperienced business owners sometimes use them too quickly and inappropriately. The result? They either get themselves in trouble, or they don’t get the value from the title change/promotion that they could have received.
