For Love, Money and Country

By her own admission, Helene Rodriguez never learned how to relax. Perhaps that's not surprising insight about an entrepreneur -- especially one whose experience includes managing billion dollar budgets for the government, designing new systems for workforce management in the pharmaceutical industry, and running a company in the absence of her partner and husband during his tour in Iraq -- but she misses the concept of down time.

In a way, it was a sacrifice she made for her country.

Helene and her husband, Irving McConnell, are partners in The McConnell Group, Inc., a health sciences company that provides biomedical research and research support services. Established in 1996 by Irving, a veterinarian and research scientist, the company began as a one-stop shop to meet the infrastructure needs of laboratories in biomedical research environments. When Helene left her position at SmithKline Beecham to join the company in the year 2000, she could not have anticipated that she would bear sole responsibility for the company's survival only three years later, while her husband served in the war in Iraq.
