The Path to Growth... Building a Company One Step at a Time
Tom Embley's approach to competition is unique - he transforms it. As CEO of Precision AirConvey Corporation (www.airconvey.com), Tom now runs the company for which he once worked and with which he once competed.
In the Beginning...
Tom joined Precision AirConvey Corp. (PAC), a global authority in pneumatic conveying technology, as a staff engineer when he graduated from the University of Delaware in 1987. His senior design professor was a silent partner in the small company, where Tom thrived for nine years by "finding challenges and figuring out how to meet them". He ultimately assumed responsibility for running the operation.
The fated entrepreneur was eager to own, so Tom launched a competitive business. In only four years, he built a $2M company that competed head-to-head with the $3.5M company he'd left. "They saw me as a bigger threat than I was," confides Tom.

Mark your calendars for our next "Un-Networking" event - 'Dining with the CEO: The Leadership Paradox'
Our next "Un-Networking" event will be held on Monday, June 2nd at 5 pm at the Union League in Philadelphia. Our featured speaker will be Dave Griffith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Modern Group Ltd. The Modern Group,(www.moderngroup.com), based in Bristol, Pennsylvania, is one of the nation's largest industrial distributors. Dave will speak about running a values-drive organization that is 100% employee-owned and the best practices in getting the most out of the people you work with – by contributing the most to them. The company is one of the most progressive "larger" small businesses that we know with 22 locations, 600 employees, 400 products and 10% annual growth – in a mature industry. Modern Group's business is in the material handling, industrial distribution and services, power generation, construction, rental and municipal industries. In addition to leading the transformation at Modern for more than a decade, Dave is active as a national speaker on business ethics, technology, leadership, customer loyalty, and work life balance. It should be a great event that you won't want to miss.

2008 Growth Strategies Survey
Thank you to all who participated in the 2008 Growth Strategies Survey and to those who attended the Swimming with the Sharks event on February 29th. The panel answered some tough questions and gave us many insights to better manage ourselves and others. Many thanks to Greg Charbeneau, Jane Hoffer, and Tom Behlau for really putting themselves out there for us.
The Growth Strategies Survey results demonstrated the optimism that continues to exist in the small business community about the economy in spite of the gloomier prospects talked about in the mainstream media.
